What to Expect

If you'd like to have the time of your life, and experience the true flavour of the peoples and culture of Chiang Mai and the rest of Northern Thailand, then I'd strongly recommend you contact the Chiang Mai based tour operator, Victoria Travel & Tour company to arrange all your tour arrangements in this region. Over a number of years as a director of a British based tour operation I have had Victoria Travel & Tour company care for our groups of from 6 to 20 people. Without any exceptions I have received praise for them from every one of our customers I've spoken to. The owner of the company is Suriya Ta-Khong, who refreshingly, still conducts a number of tours personally, in and around Chiang Mai and to some of the more remote regions of Northern Thailand.

He is in high demand, and therefore you may not be able to get him for your tour. But do request him. He is one of the most experienced tour guides in Thailand and has many friends in the small towns & villages in the Chiang Mai area as well as in the more remote areas around Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son and in his Native North East Thailand. You will find that, if your tour guide is a friend to the people of the location you're visiting, you will be welcomed with open arms. No need to prove yourself first - there isn't time to do that anyway. You will be accepted right from the word 'go'. Personally I've been invited into many homes, including the homes of tribal people, on the strength of me being a 'friend' of Suriya Ta-Khong. I highly recommend that you have the same experience, as you visit the Chiang Mai area.

I've met Suriya, on many occasions, and observed his work first hand, and can see why our customers love him so much. He has a genuine concern for each traveller and sees to it personally that each one is included in the experience. When he takes a group to visit a tribal village you will observe that he not only has a deep understanding of their way of life, but he knows the villagers and their chief personally, and introduces his travellers to them as friends. In travelling around the areas of Northern Thailand myself, I have found that people look forward with excitement to his visits and put on a much warmer reception for his travellers, than they would otherwise do so.

You'll find him to be warm, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and determined to give you the most deeply satisfying experience of your life, as you visit Chiang Mai and the rest of Northern Thailand and get to know its peoples. But as I say, he is in high demand and you may not get him, but ask anyway. It may help if you say that John Lisgo has introduced you.

Suriya was born and brought up in the poor Khonkhan region of Northeast Thailand where the only wealth people possess is that of human warmth and kindness. Although he now enjoys a greater level of material wealth than in his youth, he still has not lost that common touch which allows him to be close to the simple village people and to be the bridge that will allow you to experience that closeness too.

After graduating from Khonkhan college, Suriya moved to Bangkok. But just 2 years later he could not resist the pull of Northern Thailand and his love of nature, wildlife, and the hill tribe people of the northern region.. So he returned to the north and settled in Chiang Mai, and has worked in that area as a tour guide and travel company owner for the past 19 years. If you would like his assistance in having a never-to-be-forgotten experience, then click on the link below to contact him.
